Master of Science in Engineering - SDSU's College of Engineering has prepared hundreds of graduates for careers in management and/or research and development with its Master of Science in Engineering degree. The MS degree is a recognized credential that can open new doors of opportunity for professional advancement by engineers. It should be considered a necessity for those pursuing a career in R&D and is a requirement for admission into most engineering doctoral programs. Most full-time students complete the degree in two years. The College of Engineering offers the MS in Engineering degree with emphases in the following classical engineering disciplines: Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.

Master of Science in Industrial Management - For those who are already managers, the MSIM program offers an opportunity to develop new management styles and techniques while upgrading and strengthening their present background. For new people, those who are moving into management or aspire to be managers, there is a basic course work for studying the people-to-people issues along with offerings of technical topics. There are three methods of progress toward the MSIM degree. Students may elect to pursue the traditional thesis route: this is valuable for individuals who anticipate future graduate work toward achieving the terminal degree in a related field. Most students select the research/design paper route: this requirement generally takes the form of a project in collaboration with local or regional industry to solve a problem or to improve a system or process. A third option is a non-thesis program with additional coursework culminating in a Comprehensive Exam. Regardless of the option selected, the student works closely with his/her Major Advisor to develop the program of study plan, make consistent progress toward completion of the degree, and to show proficiency in integrating and applying industrial management concepts through the Final Oral Exam. The student develops a set of courses for a plan of study by working with the program coordinator. The strength of the degree allows students flexibility and yet requires diversity in the subjects studied. To insure diversity there is a core of courses that are selected from the following five topic areas: Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems, Manufacturing, and Analysis. Several courses are available in these areas, and you will develop a curriculum that fits your goals and background.

Master of Social Work - The school's advanced
curriculum offers students a choice between two concentrations:
Family Centered Practice and Integrated Practice. Advanced students
take courses in theory, policy, practice, practicum and practicum
seminar in one of these concentrations. The Family Centered Practice
concentration prepares students to provide direct services to those
experiencing issues such as mental illness, family violence, abuse
and neglect, juvenile offenses, substance abuse, relationship problems,
and parenting skills. The goals of such work are to increase competence
of individuals, to support family functioning, and to decrease
the need for various types of institutionalization. Graduates of
this concentration work in mental health, traditional family service
as well as the intensive family based service, and child welfare
agencies. As the only graduate social work program in a rural state,
practice knowledge and skills need to be generalized; thus, students
are prepared for practice in a variety of settings and a variety
of populations across the life span. The Integrated Practice concentration
teaches a model of advanced practice that aims to meet the many
needs of individuals and families through culturally sensitive
assessing, planning, intervening, and evaluating in multiple systems.
This concentration is designed for students who will work where
advanced generalist interventions are necessary, such as community-
and family-based agencies, rural settings, and large organizations.
In these settings, social workers function as team members and
leaders, and must often coordinate activities across different
departments and agencies. Graduates of this concentration work
in many roles including: case manager, service coordinator, supervisor,
executive director, program planner, developer, policy leader,
teacher, medical or school social worker, etc. The next cohort will begin in 2011.
